Types of corona tests

What is the difference between the Rapid test, the PCR test and the antibody test?

During a Rapid test, one of our nurses or doctor’s assistants will use a cotton swab to collect a small sample from your throat and your nose. With this Rapid test, it only takes 20 minutes to determine whether you have certain virus proteins (antigens) in your body, which indicate an infection with Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).

During a PCR test, one of our nurses or doctor’s assistants will use a cotton swab to collect a small sample from your throat and your nose. These samples will be taken to the lab, where they will be tested for coronavirus. The PCR test measures active virus substances, which indicate a possible infection. The PCR test can be used to determine whether you are currently infected with the coronavirus

During an antibody test, one of our BIG-registered nurses will take a blood sample. We will examine that sample for Corona antibodies.

During the analysis of the sample, a total of three antibodies will be examined; IgM IgA and IgG. IgM is the first antibody that is produced during an infection, so if there’s IgM detected in your blood, there is an active infection in your blood. Once the body starts to fight the infection, it will start producing the antibody IgA. After a few weeks, your blood may contain the IgG antibody, once this is detected in your blood, your body has developed a level of immunity against the virus. In short; the antibody test can measure if you have developed immunity against the Coronavirus as a result of a past infection.

Which type of corona test do I need?

We offer three different types of tests; the Rapid antigen test, the PCR test and the antibody test.

The required tests may differ per destination. Please bear in mind that it is your own responsibility to make sure you have the information you need for your trip.

You can always try and contact the embassy of the country you’re travelling to and the airline for the current information and requirements.
